Chapter
One: Grow Teams, Don't Build Them. Every team is more like a
garden than a construction project. What works for one team won't work
for all. Over time teams will develop and mature.
Chapter Two: Creating
a Team Charter. How
will the team know if it is making things better or worse? Where are
team members supposed to find the time to meet? What is the sunset
clause for the team?
Chapter Three,
How Will Decisions Be Made? Consensus decision making and other
decision modes.
Consensus means everyone was "heard." It doesn't mean that everyone
gets their first choice. Sometimes teams will be used to gather input,
but not to make a decision.
Chapter Four,
Defining Roles: Facilitators, Team Leaders, and Hybrids of Every
Sort. How do
Team Leaders differ from Facilitators? Team members have more power and
therefore more responsibility than is traditionally the case.
Chapter Five,
The First Meeting, Setting up the Ground Rules. This is where you can make or break
your team. Make sure everyone understands their new roles.
Chapter Six,
How to Deal with Pitfalls; The Nuts and Bolts of Running Meetings.
What do I
do when I get stuck?

QUICK DETAILS
Welcome. This book is
designed to speed up your processing of information. There are four
steps for reading each chapter that will accelerate both your
understanding of the material as well as retention of it.
The first two steps are all you
need follow if you are simply curious about
the contents of this book, but you are not yet ready to read "the
whole
thing."
STEP #1: Read the summary page that begins each chapter. This will give you a quick scan
of the materials and serve later as a useful reference for finding
details you want to review.
STEP #2:
Each "page" is divided into a a left hand "QUICK
READ" column and a right hand "DETAILS"
column. Scan the "QUICK READ" section first reading through the entire chapter. This
will give you the major ideas of that chapter. Think of the "QUICK READ" section as
crib notes that offer an abridged
digest of the book.
STEP #3: Read the "DETAILS." This is
where we are precise with ideas and present examples of applications.
STEP #4: Last, you will find a set of review questions at the end
of the following chapter. By having you wait
to answer these questions, you will better remember the details of How to Grow Effective Teams.
The answers to these
questions follow them along with explanations.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS: If you are unsure about how to apply our ideas or simply
want some advice, then send us e-mail at ronaldturner@endsoftheearth.com.
We will get back to you promptly. There is no
charge for this service and
we appreciate hearing from our readers.
MIS-STEP: If you attempt reading through the materials without
first reading the "QUICK READ" sections first, then you will probably find the "QUICK READ" sections
to be irritating breaks in the flow of the chapter. A little up-front
work will shorten the total amount of time you will take to master the
materials.
